If there is any information you would like me to provide that will further aid in resolving this issue please feel free to ask!
Hello all, I hope y'all scumbags will be able to help me out with something plaguing my computer.
First of all, here is my DxDiag info. I will split this writeup into 2 sections; 1. What I can do while windows is functioning and 2. What happens when it crashes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Part 1
I did a full Windows reinstall wiping everything on the hard drive.
I completed this VGA BIOS update (Second VGA BIOS Update for Windows 8.1 (64-bit) ) as well as this BIOS flash (Version 74CN47WW(V3.08)). **As of writing I have not tried this flash a second time, will report back when I have.
This fixed SLI enabling. Before I completed these processes I could not activate SLI in NVidia control panel. However, this still does not mean that I can USE SLI. I cannot play any game while using SLI without the computer crashing.
Single card gameplay WORKS FINE!! I assume this is only utilizing the graphics card built into the laptop and not the removable second card. **As of writing I have not tried to run a game solely on the second removable card (if this is possible), I will report back when I have attempted this.
Since my updating of BIOS and drivers I notice a significant amount of flashing from the screen.
NOTE: The computer will sometimes crash without even playing a game. Oftentimes when it does it's when I have executed a few programs at once, I assume putting a heavy load on the CPU.
I have speculated the CPU being the culprit but this laptop is advertised as being SLI capable, why would it be packaged with a CPU unable to handle the function??
Here are a couple of videos outlining my issue. I apologize for the lack of editing, I really wanted to get these up as soon as possible. Watch these in sequential order. I used TF2 because at the time of recording the GTA online servers were down.
THINGS TO NOTE:
The crashes do not seem to follow any sort of rhythm. This means they mostly happen while a game is running but occasionally not. I have run GTA in safe mode for a couple minutes before the computer crashed, sometimes the computer crashes immediately after launching the game with normal settings.
I have all NVidia control panel settings to default, no program settings.
The above is with the exception of alternate frame rendering. One of the last things I did before sitting down to write this was attempt to use alternate frame rendering 2 with safe mode activated. This yielded the best result, allowing me to play the game for a couple minutes. The game crashed a minute or so after changing vsync from half to on, no other settings were altered.
------------------------------------------
Part 2
Crash scenarios
All begin with:
1. Screen freezes, audio continues.
2. Screen goes black, audio continues.
3. Audio crashes, fans blow full blast.
4. Computer shuts off.
Scenario 1: Most common
Computer restarts, screen remains black indefinitely.
Scenario 2:
Computer restarts normally, albeit seeming to run slightly slower than normal.
Scenario 3:
Computer restarts, this screen pops up after a few seconds of splash screen showing Unauthorized slave VGA card is plugged in. Power off and remove it.
Scenario 4:
Computer does not restart.
SOMETIMES:
I can hear a "ding" as if an error message popped up. However, the screen has gone black and I am unable to view this.
How to fix Scenario 3:
1. Power computer off w/ power button.
2. Remove battery (If not already out)
3. Remove second video card.
4. Reboot normally.
5. While Windows is running, insert video card back into slot.
6. Restart computer.
The result of this is generally a reset back to normal, both video cards recognized in the device manager. However, this is not always guaranteed and may require another restart to accurately reset.
After each computer restart there is an assortment of things that may happen.
1. Everything is all good, both video cards recognized by device manager, SLI is able to be enabled in NVIDIA control panel.
2. Both cards are recognized but one shows this message.
3. Both cards are recognized but both have error messages. This is what appears when I view the device.
4. Only one video card is recognized, Intel graphics doesn't show up under the Display Adapters.
5. I do not think it has ever restarted and shown both Intel graphics as well as the GTX750m under Display Adapters.
-------------------------------
As of now this is all I can think of to write, I will include relevant information as I think of it. I am trying to be as thorough as possible but if you do need more information PLEASE ASK!! I'm keen to get this working right! I do not have a high level of technical proficiency, I will say I'm mildly competent, but I will do what I can.
