I've done this too. It's literally only when I'm playing gta. Every other game is fine.

I had the same, it started with only GTA not working (probably because it's such a heavy game and needs to read a lot from disc). If you clean the laser it should be better, don't let it get so dirty that the dust etc is stuck to the laser. If you google it or on youtube are a lot of great guides on how you open it and just clean it.

Is it possible to clean the BR-lens with a 'old-fashioned' CD/DVD cleaning disc. (the ones with the tiny brushes) or will this damage the lens?

Is it possible to clean the BR-lens with a 'old-fashioned' CD/DVD cleaning disc. (the ones with the tiny brushes) or will this damage the lens? Ive personally never used one of those but as long as its not sharp enough to scatch the "little shell thingy" that the lazer beams through I think you should be good to go. I also imagine anything designed to do such a thing is some sort of microfiber material that is made to do just that, so you should be fine. With my PS2 my dad would take it apart every few months and clean it when the discs stopped reading and he used the same clothe that came with a disc cleaning kit and it worked fine. We had 3 dogs and 3 cats so this was needed more than most people should have to deal with because having pets really add to the dust levels. I hoped this helped for you or anyone else

Well as I have 2 PS3 systems. The one that I bought brand new in 2009 has never been took apart to be cleaned properly. You can see from outside the shell how much dust there is. The other PS3 I bought second hand I have no idea how old that is. But maybe if I strip them both down, get all dust out it should solve my freezing problem.

Can we mark this as resolved now Trowa? I stripped them both down and cleaned them and they seem to be ok so far.
