This is a shooting game, kind of, right? So lets talk loadouts, tips, favorites, observations, etc. Frankly, the guns and shooting mechanics in GTA5 were a big let-down after R* put out Max Payne 3, which was terrific.
Has anyone out there done tests on these weapons the way Broughy did with the cars? Is there any empirical reason to choose one over another? I can barely tell the difference, within a given class, and have no clue what the stats are meant to represent.
The only thing I care about is convenience and speed of selection. This means DROPPING MOST OF THEM. After you level up there's no reason to carry some of the earlier weapons, imo.
Here's what I carry (from memory):
** all of these are fully modded, except without the flashlight, which I find is more of a hindrance.
Pistols: Pistol (the game apparently doesn't let you drop this permanently), AP Pistol (best small auto I think, and useable in-car) Machine Guns: Combat MG only (does anyone else thing it's stupid the SMGs and MGs are in the same panel?) Assault Rifles: Carbine Rifle and an Advanced Rifle w/o silencer (I thought having one silenced longer AR and one "loud" closer AR would be cool but frankly I don't know if it matters!) Snipers: both. The lighter one is silenced but I don't know if it matters. Melee: knife and a bat (or golf club? I forget...) Shotguns: the Auto only (You can use the Sawed-Off on a bike but I don't care much) Heavies: Grenade Launcher, RPG and Minigun. (considering dumping the GL...) Bombs: Grenades and Stickies. (they boosted Tear Gas in 1.14, anyone have any luck with it?)

As you can see, none of the DLC weapons seemed worth the money to me.

I'm sure some kind of tests are out there. I haven't bothered with them though. I think the general consensus is the Carbine Rifle is the best. I'd use it even if it wasn't. AR is my favorite platform. And that float rail, you gotta love that. I only wish they'd put a different stock on it. I mean c'mon. You can have the Magpul MOE stock on a shotgun and a grenade launcehr, but not on the AR, which it was developed for? I'd also like if they colored it a bit better. It looks too green. I'd also like a different scope on it. The ELCAN is a good scope for sure, especially for the environments you fight in in GTA, but we can have an Aimpoint Micro on the AK. Why not the AR? Also a stubby grip instead of the angled foregrip would be nice. Yeah, I really don't like a lot of things about that gun when thinking about it now. But still, I like it better than any other one out there. I don't drop weapons. I only always make sure that the ones I want are on top before starting a DM. I use the AR most of the time. I only use the Assault Shotgun at very close range. I have the Combat MG at the ready if I want to use the aim assist at ranges the Carbine won't aim at. Silenced Sniper Rifle for stealthy sniping from bushes (a very useful tactic). I also like using the sheer destructive power of the Advanced Sniper, but I realize that the Minigun is probably a better choice. Minigun's range is extreme and it kills so fast. It's the best weapon for long ranges, without a doubt. I only use melee for fun, when I know I can sneak up on a guy and humiliate him with a stealth knife kill. When I'm thrown into a melee lobby I immediately leave, because the melee combat is always very laggy for me and it always turns into a disgusting mess. So that's a big no no. I silence all my guns I want to use in combat. I think being off the map a preferable to that little bit of extra damage in any situation. I'm looking forward to the new SCAR-style rifle that's supposedly coming in the future. If it looks good enough, I might trade my AR for it. Sometimes I use the 1911 only, if I want some extra challenge. That gun is very fun to shoot. In deathmatches I almost always end up in 1st with K/D usually around 4. No idea why is my K/D stuck on 1.6 in my stats.

I carry around all weapons cos it's a pain if you pick them up again and have to buy ammo / upgrades again. I just make sure I've got the right ones selected when I start.
I've taken suppressors off everything as I don't DM very often.
I've only kept torches on shotguns, pistols and the grenade launcher. They're no use on rifles it's no use as they're long range weapons and the torch is particularly short range and just makes you obvious where you are.
None of the DLC weapons are any good, unless you have a low level character.

I hold all weapons... Ive played quite a few DMs, TDMs, and LTSs. My main weapons are Advanced Rifle fully upgraded minus suppressor, Carbine Rifle fully upgraded with suppressor, Heavy Sniper Fully upgraded, Combat MG fully upgraded, that Tommy-gun DLC MG fully upgraded (that thing is beast vs choppers at mid range), Micro SMG fully upgraded with suppressor, AP pistol fully upgraded minus suppressor, Auto Shotgun fully upgraded minus suppressor, Sawn shotgun, pump shotgun fully upgraded with suppressor, All 3 heavy weapons (the grenade launcher is very underrated. It has an arc so with some smart aiming you can take out campers without giving them a chance to lock on to you), all thrown weapons (I actually got a teargas kill for the 1st time the other day.... it was hilarious), crowbar, and a Baseball Bat.

For weapons the Stats are for the most part accurate to me, so for my first character I get all of them, but with my second I'm a little bit more picky
Damage and firing rate is the real key in most games, though if you're in a free-aim game, then you'll have to ask someone else...
The DLC Rifles such as the Special Carbine (Glock 36C) and the Bullpup Rifle (QBZ Type 95) are very good to have since they do more damage than the MGs, but the MGs still have more range so it's really based on the situation to which you use.

I personally enjoy using the Special Carbine (High Life DLC) and as of recently, the Musket (Independence Day DLC).
My Special Carbine is non-silenced, but has the extended mag and scope. It's got good range, it kills people quickly, and I like the way it looks and sounds.
The Musket... I've only killed a few people with it, but it's been a one-hit kill every. single. time. I'm not sure yet if I just got lucky or if that's actually how it's supposed to work, but I'm hoping it's the latter. The combination of extreme accuracy but no scope, and huge power but a reload time comparable to filling up a tank of gas, makes it one of the most fun guns in the game in my opinion.
