As many of you may already know, Windows 10 has just launched. If there is anyone else who has the new update I'd like to hear the opinions from them! It will be quite interesting. Here are mine.
Cortana- very interesting, but isn't exactly new technology and STOP SENDING ME TO THE INTERNET. MS Edge- meh, just IE 2.0. DX12- Nothing with DX12 has been released yet but it sounds awesome. New/Old Start Screen- Finally! Win8 was awful. UI- I like it! It's simple yet effective.
General ideas- It's good! I'm glad I have it over Windows 8.
Anyone else have any opinions?

First rule when upgrading to the next version of Windows:
Has the first service pack been released? If not, do not upgrade. If it is, you can safely upgrade. However I'd always recommend starting with a clean system (installing from scratch) instead of updating the OS...

that's my opinion. i'm not switching, not yet at least. I did notice that my framerates were slightly lower than usual, maybe around 45 FPS, but that is to be expected when a game isn't optimised for an OS but I have never encountered anything like that.

Did you go ahead and install the new nvidia driver for windows 10? Edit: If you have nvidia that is lol.

He doesn't, Speccy lists an AMD card, and iirc AMD haven't released a Win10 driver that isn't a beta.
On a side note, people are reporting issues with the latest Nvidia driver too, maybe not in Win10, but in other versions at least.

I used Windows 95 up until 2001, used XP from 2001-2011 when I got a new PC and have used Windows 7 since then. Would never ever upgrade to a new OS on launch day, far too many issues are always reported. Plus, Windows 7 still does everything I need it to.

Most people preferred XP back in the day, frankly I was a Win2k supporter, it did everything XP did much more smoothly and with far fewer stability issues.
Between 7 and 8.1 though, for me it's an easy choice, 8.1 is objectively better, and while I agree the tablet functionality shite that was slapped on it by default was annoying as all hell, with a couple of programs you can effectively remove all of it and what you're left with is basically 7 with a bit of extra get up and go.
As and when I upgrade to 10, I'll still be using those programs, since I prefer the overall look and feel of the older OS's and want to keep that along with the technological advancements that the newer OS brings, one thing for sure though is that I'll be waiting til the launch issues are remedied if not until SP1 before I make the change.. And even then I might not bother, there'll be no DX12 games for a long time yet so the principle reason to upgrade from a gamers perspective is inactive, in much the same way that DX10 was when they launched it with Vista to try and get the gamers on board.

Upgraded, other than a Chrome being a bit slow the first couple of hours after the upgrade, I've had no issues.
But I would like to iterate, Windows is ideal for people who are just using a computer to do general activities. If you are someone who digs in system files and customizes your computer out the wazoo, Windows is not for you. It's made for the general public, not hackers and modders.
P.S. There's also a built-in Game DVR to Windows 10 now, I noticed that when playing Star Trek Online last night (which, IMO, ran smoother than it did on Windows 8)

I agree. I make my living as a programmer and hardware engineering, and Linux is very powerful to use for my job. If you're an artist I would imagine Mac OSX being nice to use. For my work it's probably horrid.
Still I use Windows 7 daily, because I couldn't see myself using Windows 8. I keep Windows around for games and general stuff, because you want to micro-manage every tiny bit of your system 24/7. When I need Linux I start a virtual machine. If long term gaming becomes better on Linux I may switch, but I actually really like gaming on the PS4 now so I may not need it at all.
Nevertheless I do like the changes in Windows 10, especially the quick settings dialog seems powerful for laptop users. Sometimes I felt that those settings were too scattered, especially if you compare them with where mobile phones (Android Lollipop) stands today.

I'm not upgrading on launch. Apparently, a clean install is totally possible after you've upgraded. You old key will now work for either Win10 or the old version! Nice job, MS oleg_aka_djmeg 200 series with 4gigs might still be a 270X Kappa

Is it me, or is my contrast lower than it was before I upgraded to Windows 10? Colours seem much more faded after the upgrade.
I like the new upgrade, hated Win8, but I like the current theme and return of the classic start menu. Cortana is by no means a life-saver but is a fun thing to talk to if you need time to kill. However, my laptop's mic isn't the best, shall we say, so you need to be speaking in a slightly louder tone for Cortana to hear you properly.

Speaking of colours/contrast it's highly likely that you calibrated your monitor on the old OS and simply forgot about it once it was done, other than that I can't see any reason why there'd be a difference. Cortana to me is a useless item, it's literally faster to open my browser and type a search in google than it is to use any kind of voice control to do it, and I'd imagine any OS related stuff that Cortana could do can be done as fast if not faster with appropriate use of keyboard shortcuts. As to Ser Tandur saying that Windows isn't really the OS of choice if you like to "customize out the wazoo" I'd have to disagree to some extent. Sure, *nix variants will allow you to really fine tune *everything* but the likelihood of being able to play the vast majority of games is not a good one even factoring in WINE and virtualization, so you'd still need to dual-boot into a Windows variant. For general use, standard Windows settings are fine, I'll agree wholeheartedly on that, but lets just take a look at Windows 8/8.1 as an example - In its standard setup, it has probably the worst interface possible for mouse+keyboard usage with the Metro integration, and that integration is what turns a lot of people off using it even though it is objectively a better OS than 7, with slight customization (2 programs is all I use) and a few tweaks here and there (simple option changes) you can effectively never see any of the Metro interface unless you physically force it to open - Such a tiny amount of customization for such a large change in usability is more than worth it to me. Frankly though, these days you don't need to customize much on any OS once you are using an interface that you're comfortable with, this isn't like the days of single core 32-bit cpu's with a max of 4gb of ram running Windows XP/2000 where you actively needed to strip out components and kill services to get the best possible performance.. That's not to say that you can't go ahead and do exactly that if you so wish, just that in the days of 64-bit quad-core (and higher) cpu's running 8gb+ ram there's very little point to doing so for any performance reasoning except just to say that you've done it. As I said earlier, if and when I do upgrade to Windows 10, I'll still be customizing it to my own ends, as an example the Start menu, sure it's back at an OS level but I still have no use for live tiles so that will have to be changed, as I mentioned earlier Cortana is useless to me so will also be removed, beyond that I can guarantee there'll be around 20-30 usability fixes that I'll apply for various reasons because honestly a lot of the default settings range from annoying at best, completely useless, or just plain ugly, the game-DVR functionality mentioned earlier in the thread will be removed, as will the console streaming functionality, and that's just what I can think of right now, there's likely to be a whole lot more that I'll strip out for one reason or another.. And that's just at the base OS level, this is prior to swapping out the default apps that MS provides with options that are much better suited to the task for general usability such as 7zip, Notepad++, VLC, Chrome etc. For anyone mistakenly thinking I'm a Windows lover though, I'll mention that overall I prefer a *nix environment for general usage, the stability and security they provide is unparalleled as long as you know what you're doing regarding the setup of the OS, but considering that I'm a gamer at heart and that I'd have to run dual-boot to do what I love the most, I simply choose to not deal with the hassle of setting up and maintaining two operating systems.. Now if MS would pull their heads out of their arses and make DirectX the open platform that everyone wishes that it was, or if game developers would simply stop using it and instead use openGL/AL, that would change in a heartbeat, oh for an ideal world..

^^ most of the stuff mentioned here never crosses the mind of millions of casual Windows users. Some of it I've never given any thought to either, and I'm a bigger computer geek that the vast majority of Windows users.
So... my point is proven again.
Here's an analogy most here would understand: Windows is like a Chevy Volt, and users who aren't happy with the tech are mechanics who show up at a drag strip and are pissed they can't turn the Volt into a hot rod.
On the flip side, the *nix systems are like giving a Lamborghini Aventador to a 90 year old woman and telling her she has to use launch control at every light and sports settings when on the interstate.

upgraded on launch day, had a small resolution issue, but after that it worked great for me, pretty much no FPS drops on GTA and it runs more stable now
