I have seen some tracks (especially by DrKloden) where props have been put flat in the ground to create a road. I also have tried to do it, but somehow I can't figure out how to do it. Can anyone help me with a description or a link to a tutorial?

It's quite simple. Put two props, let's go with barriers for now, next to each other, like this: | |
Now make a template out of them.
Next, you need to select the template. The game chooses one of the barriers (#1) in the template as the one you can spin around, and the other one (#2) basically orbits around it. Barrier #2 is the one you can place anywhere you like. Once you've placed it, you can remove barrier #1 so only the one on the ground remains.
Be careful not to completely make the prop disappear in the ground when you place it though, as there is no way to remove the prop without removing all of the props.

I have since made a video which basically shows what I described there

That's really cool! I'm going to have to keep that in mind next time I make a track. Can you do this as well on last gen?
