Hello fellow racers
Probably many us were playing racing games long before GTA. Arcade, simulations or management games, there are a lot good racing games out there. And some of them you might have loved more than the usual racing game. I personally play racing games for like 15 years now (eek) and thought it would be cool to share some nostalgia
I understand its highly subjective and many games might be rubbish by todays standards, so I will try to point out what made those games outstanding in my eyes If you have some good memories for a game I would be glad to hear So lets start with the top 3 from my list:
Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 2
This as the first game that brought me into racing when i was like 14 years old. The sheer immersion of this title was awesome and probably is one of the main reasons I started to love racing. I used to play multiplayer with a friend back then, which meant we both were sitting in front of the same monitor and switching seats every couple of laps, while the KI was driving the second car for that time, then switching roles again.
One of the most fun parts at that time (though we barely knew much about it at that age), was the in game telemetry system: s13.postimg.org/ws21vkquf/data.png or s4.postimg.org/g5da55sdp/data2.png (I couldnt find an image so I took a screenshot from the manual). Some simple things like ride height we understood, and it was so much fun to look at the charts to tune it accordingly.
The other oputstanding thing was the manual included with the game. On a whopping 150 pages it featured a full racing school on lines, setup, tracks, cars and what not. s17.postimg.org/vwr29kpdb/manual.png
If anybody is curious about it, you can still download it and have a look at replacementdocs.com/download.php?view.8807
Finally some youtube of the general game feeling: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv-2cR1c0NU
Grand Prix Legends
Probably one of the toughest racing games I ever played. Published in 1998 and featuring the 1967 F1 season, you will be driving only hell of cars. No downforce, wide and fast tracks plus awesome car sounds. Its still around in its niche though and looks lot of fun with head tracking support and all: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K_cZpPMdJA
For this game its really about the gameplay, so I dont have much to go into detail
F1 Manager Professional
This is an 1996 F1 management game, which IMHO is unchallenged even today (because there not much f1 management games at all). The game most notably featured an live view of the races, where I just could watch full length races in bird eyes view with squeeky F1 sounds
Here is some gameplay, and the game can still be played in dosbox (which I do from time to time): www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzP1lsj1UjE. Skip to 18:07 for a feel of the live race view, though the game features a lot more in depth as you can see as well in the video. (fun fact: the guy in the video sends both cars into the race with only 9 litres of fuel so both drop out after two laps at 19:35)
I could go but lets stick to those three for now. If you played one the games above (or others), please feel free to share your nostalgia
