Wow, difficult to say who on the red team made a bigger mistake there Question from an american football newbie - I didn't know that QBs played in defense too. Does this happen often?

I'm not a starting QB I'm primarily a defensive back, and on that play I was a defensive tackle (standing in for an injured player). In highschool leagues you will see players playing both defense and offense like myself, so in highschool you will see a QB playing both ways and professional and college leagues probably not.

Typical high school football. We never kicked the ball for field goals, because honestly, we couldn't find a kicker that could make anything longer than an extra point. We almost always went for 2, and went for it on 4th if past the 35 yard line.

I'm assuming this is in Canada since the goal posts are in the front of the endzone. Doing things all backwards you fools! Sorry...
Good play though for sure. Did you kick the ball out of the placeholders hands? Haha!

As someone who has never watched a single game of american football I have literally no idea what am I looking at. I like NASCAR though.

A lot of things went wrong in that play. The defense is in an illegal formation which is why you went unblocked. Horrible snap from the center. Terrible decision by the placeholder not run the ball once the play is dead and then another illegal action when the ball is kicked. You cant do that lol. Coaches generally tell you to fake like you are trying to pick it up when you kick it because its illegal. This is one of those situations where you would do it bc even if they recover the further the ball is in the other direction the better the field position for your team. It is high school football but all around this is just bad officiating and the kicking team got fucked hardcore. Reminds me of the replacement refs in the NFL a few years ago Then again this is canadian football and the rules are not up to par with what we do in the united states so if somehow that is a legal play it kind of goes to show why canadian football gets as many views as arena football.

I couldn't tell from that angle if there was a lineman directly over the center, but it doesn't look like it. Otherwise, they didn't go offsides. As for kicking it... yeah, that's probably illegal as Philip Rivers will show you but there are times when, if not deliberate, they'll let it go.

As for kicking it... yeah, that's probably illegal as Philip Rivers will show you but there are times when, if not deliberate, they'll let it go. The illegal formation would be favoring 1 side over the other which is now a rule in american football. They have 9 guys on the right side and only 3 including the nose tackle on the left. You cant do that in the NFL. Both sides need to be even so 6 and 6 or in american football 5 &5 with the nose tackle being slightly to one side or the other so as to not get a penalty for lining up directly over the center. The thing about kicks not being deliberate is why coaches tell you to make it look like you accidently kicked it. Make it look good like you are a bumbling idiot who cant pick up a football and keeps kicking it further away from the other team until you have a clean shot to pick it up or a teammate does. Its a dirty tactic and clearly illegal but any coach worth his salt teaches you things like that. The reasoning behind that rule is to prevent overloading. There are more guys on the right side rushing than it is possible to guard. Unless some man child blocks like 3 people at once or you pull a guard on a FG attempt (LOL at the thought of that sight). Truth be told they must lack all confidence in everyone on that field because as bad as they are overloaded I daresay you could drive a semi-truck down the left side of the field. There is no one there and twice the blockers to defenders. Essentially vice-versa from the other side of the field.

I missed it, and apparently it only comes up during punting and kicking (FG, PAT) situations. The rule seems to imply only about lining up more than 6 guys per side "on the line of scrimmage" so it looks like they were legal. New NFL rules: Overloading line restriction will protect linemenI couldn't imagine that the defense isn't allowed to overload one side of a formation because the offense is only required to have 3 players on the line of scrimmage on one side of the ball, and 7 on the line total, both sides and center. Since it was fairly new I had never heard of it. That's why I was stumped by your first comment about it. I was alot more critical before I realized it might be possible I missed a new rule, but just couldn't find it on Google.

Yeah its a fairly new rule that a lot of officials have failed on. Just ask any Pittsburg Steelers fan who was depending on KC's backups to make the game winning FG and that would send them to the playoffs trololololol. I think technically that formation may be legal in the video on a second count bc some of the guys arent on the line. At first glance it looked illegal. The kick though. That 100% is illegal and the placeholder still should have ran. No idea what he was thinking still.

Did you just dog my Chiefs? ? Never would I ever do that I was born and raised in KC. Just pointing out a point where the rule has failed to be implemented on the pro level. I know more about the Chiefs than is probably healthy for someone to know.

Boys this is Canadian ball, whatever illegal formation on the defense. Its not. Why I broke through is because I don't belong where I was, that o-line was not at my speed especially coming out a two point stance.
