So with Ubisoft doing a free weekend for R6S, I figured I might give the game a try seeing as it has intrigued me for a while but I was uncertain whether it was worth picking up. So after a few hours of play, here are my first impressions.
Holy crap does this game take skill. Most definitely not your average FPS game.
First thing I realized was map knowledge was key. If you don't know absolutely every single breachable window or every possible angle, you are easy pickings for experienced players. I would not recommend this game if you have never played FPS games, because the learning curve is severely high, even on consoles. You will also learn that small noises are huge giveaways to both you and the enemy. I was playing on one map where I was a floor below the enemy and he heard me reloading my gun and was able to breach the floor and gun me down before I could turn around. Sound is a huge factor.
Your choice in operator is everything. I highly suggest getting 3 offense and 3 defense operators by earning renown through the single-player missions, but even those are not walks in the park. Of course you can just choose Recruit and not worry about picking and choosing (Seeing as each team can only have one of each operator), but he is not as specialized as someone like Rook or Fuze. Trust me when I say that if you are retrieving a hostage, never ever EVER choose Fuze unless you want to get team killed. This happened to be three times and, of course I reported them for team killing, but their response to why they killed me was, and I quote: "I'd rather get reported than lose a match because some idiot kills the hostage"
Speaking of which, awareness of where your allies are is key as friendly fire is in the game. Not only can you damage and kill teammates, but their gadgets as well. I had thought one time I was shooting an enemy drone when instead I destroyed one of Frost's bear traps...and was promptly shot in the back by said Frost.
One final note is experienced players take no guff from new players and most will outright kill you the moment you screw something up. They'll shoot you in the back if you so much as rush ahead of them. I was shot in the back twice while moving ahead of the group. And they get really angry when you get last kill and they had killed the previous 4. Actually had one guy say "You couldn't have just died so I could get my ace could you?"
All in all, the game is enjoyable, but only for the experienced player. If you are not experienced with FPS games, I would not recommend playing this as lack of experience will ruin your time. But if you are experienced, there is still a learning curve as the play style is much different than something like Call of Duty, Battlefield, or even Counter-Strike. I would rate the game a 4 out of 5, but the player base a 1.5 out of 5.
Let me know your thoughts. Do you guys enjoy this game? Will you be trying out the free weekend?
