Dunno why but I actually prefer keyboard and mouse, there's something about being able to look all the time where you're going not needing to rely on the analog sticks but that's just my preference

I was racing using a keyboard all my life, I just recently got a controller and at first it was really strange to use, but then I eventually got used to it and driving is better and more enjoyable.

I don't think there is a big difference in speed between keyboard and gamepad. It is mostly a question of what you prefer and feel comfortable with. I am somehow in the middle: I don't like racing with kbd. However, I can't handle gamepads with analog sticks. Maybe because they are mounted at the wrong positions on all gamepads. If you are supposed to use the sticks then why are the not placed where the dpad is on xbox and PS controller? Cause that would be the natural position for your thumb.
However, don't want to pull this offtopic: I pulled out my old gamepad that has no sticks and no triggers, only the d-pad and "regular" buttons. I even linked everything to keys on kbd (only way to use that pad in gta) so it is basically the same as kbd but as it is so much more ergonomic, I am at least 1 second per minute racing time faster than with kbd.
Guess, throttle controll can give you an advantage though, depending on car and track. But the main factor to be fast in GTA remains using all the boosts that you can get. I recently raced against randoms in the special car races. I was the only one using kerb boosting and boy, I had forgotten how much speed you gain through this!

It'd def help if/when you get used to it. I'm an avid keyboard user myself and can't for the life of me get used to racing with a controller but I'd still love to.. need to just practice more, it's just I generally don't have the patience.. couple fails and I throw the controller away and finish the race with keyboard lol LOL....I feel your pain. I can't get away from the keyboard.....lack of patience...probably the same for me. I grew up PC, I love PC, I live PC. However, I bought Xbox1 a few months ago but I can't get used to the controller. So, I broke down and bought the XIM APEX input adapter to work with kb and mouse. I can't wait to try it out.

i usually use a controller as i feel that i have a lot more control over my car. but recently i have broken my wrist and cannot use a controller so i have had to get used to using a keyboard and personally after using it i actually really enjoy using a keyboard:)

I was looking for a threat related to which one is better keyboard+mouse or controller. And what happens to me is exactly this: I try using the controller only to be finishing the race using the KB+mouse. I got my current PC since 2012 and since then I almost never touch my PS3 again. Just some random quick play which probably last time was back in 2014.
I thought for a long time that controller was probably easier to drive at GTA but the truth is more simple: whatever you feel comfortable to be using.

What i'm seeing is that lines and comfort really determines which one to use.

Overall controllers have slight more freedom for driving over kb+m, steering turned at lesser intervals allowing for more accurate weaving and you can use less power on throttle at will which could give you an advantage when following racing lines. Otherwise, it's 90% personal comfort but using a controller can give you a tiny bit more access to your vehicle's capabilities.

If u think racing with keyboard is not really comfortable, try to change some settings. What I did before was changing accelerate to spacebar, deaccelerate to ctrl, and stearing to left and right arrow.

Interestingly, I steer better with the keyboard because you have to tap the keys. However, throttle control just goes right out the window for me, as does any form of consistency.

Before I got my xbone controller I used keyboard and a joystick. I still think the joystick is better for precise steering than the controller. Although the controller feels better in your hands after long sessions. Plus the dosing with braking and throttle is easier on controller. It was probably possible on the joystick too, but never really bothered to figure out further.
