Who's gonna be Max's wingman?

Who's gonna be Max's wingman? I guess they might promote Gazly. It's slightly odd how there wasn't any hint of this happening until today. Renault were meant to be hiring Ocon and Ricciardo had only been loosely linked with McLaren.

I would guess Gasly too. The Verstappens poisoned the relationship with Sainz to the point where they had no choice but to promote Max - it was toxic. That's Jos for you - Max would do well to follow Lewis's lead and get his dad out of his career.
Having had time to think; I've been a RB supporter since Webber joined. I'll still support them but they're going to have difficulties. The Honda move was done assuming a mature team leader for the team but eventually titles... for Max. Max is still hot headed and on paper not ready to lead a team. Watch the Sky sports video where the RB drivers compete in an axe throw.
Renault have made Ricciardo a promise similar to what Merc did for Hamilton. We'll build a car around you and want titles. This doesn't mean necessarily they'll deliver - it means they want Alonso 2005/06 results.
It's the smart move. Whether it's also the right one remains to be seen.

What are your guys' thoughts on Ricciardo signing with Renault for 2019?
Do you think it was a good move to leave Redbull as Renault are not currently top 3 teams in the constructors.

The social media reaction has been, on average:
1. "No, don't break up the best pairing in F1" 2. Australian fans being mixed on Renault, but saying "good because Red Bull mistreat Australian drivers" which is such bullshit 3. Dutch fans having Maxwanks over how the move was because Max is too good at Maxing the Max out of the Max.
So, in other words, the comments are cancer. Verstappen's a factor in the move, but mostly I'd say because Red Bull want to be a works team in effect, like how McLaren-Mercedes operated back in the day. They will not get that in 2019, or even 2020, and it will have to be a post-2021 rules change move for them. Based on his age and ascendant talent, Max is the logical choice to build Red Bull around. That isn't because they hate Ricciardo (they don't) or he's bad (he's fucking not, those moves at Hungary proved it) - it's because that's the likely timetable. I'd do the same if I were them. Ricciardo made a sound choice given that reality, and I hope this is like when a Spanish guy went to Renault in 2003.

Fernando Alonso, arguably the best driver on the grid (and best at making poorly timed choices), is not racing in 2019.

Horner put it best; he "tends to cause chaos".
Sainz is confirmed for McLaren, with the second seat likely taken by one of three drivers:
Vandoorne Ocon Lando Norris
Vandoorne apparently hasn't got a lot of confidence from the McLaren bosses, and could go to Sauber to replace Leclerc when he goes to Ferrari. Sauber's management team includes Vandoorne's manager and his former GP2 boss.
Ocon would be a good choice to help rebuild the Woking team.
Norris is still young and though very quick, they may give him more time before getting a race seat which could backfire on them.

Gasly confirmed for Red Bull 2019, taking Ricciardo's seat.
An unsurprising outcome, but also possibly not the best one. Pierre is great, but Max is not an experienced team lead and hasn't had to be a team leader yet - he's been able to focus on his amazing racecraft. Having an inexperienced team lead and inexperienced second driver recalls the 2015 season (though Ricciardo at least was a leader at STR), which did not go well for them. I want Max to succeed, but I don't think 2019 will be a good year for the team.
