Hi guys, new to the board, and looking to meet new people to race with.
As a way to contributing to the community thought i would do one on an area I know a it about, networking, wifi, etc. Hope this helps someone out there, and ill keep this one brief and if anyone wants to go deeper lemmie know.
So in summary moved into a new house, no structured cabling which meant having to use wifi, so my internet connection (Virgin Media) comes into front room, and xbox is upstairs in the office. Using the Virgin media super box 2, and the standard xbox wifi connection this was poor, prone to latency, and generally poor. Those Virgin Media boxes signal, range, and power is so poor any more than 5 devices using it and it tanks hard.
Enter Ubiquiti! This kit is the nuts.
Wifi kit. Ubiquiti UniFi Controller Hybrid Cloud Key (Optional) 3 x Ubiquiti UniFi AP AC Pro Indoor / Outdoor Access Point
Optional Ubiquiti UniFi Security Gateway (USG) Ubiquiti UniFi Switch 8 Port - US-8-60W (4 ports PoE)
This meant i could daisy chain one AP in the front room hard wired to the Virgin Media box, and then have another AP upstairs which is hard wired to the xbox using the spare Ethernet port on the back. The AP's use something called MiMo to multiplex multiple wifi 5ghz and 2.4ghz channels together and allows for up to 800mbs full duplex (note all wifi by standard is half duplex 802.11a/b/g/n). This is using Wifi Mesh mode instead of infrastructure mode.
Anyway long story short, no more wifi issues, and bandwidth and throughput are amazing.
Hope everyone is having a good weekend Marc
