I know that there is a post about starter cars to compete straight away but what car would anyone recommend to help me to learn how to race and practice racing lines etc in a solo race? Would the jester or turismo be good suggestions?
Thanks

Im going to assume you're on a budget, so i would pick the Entity Xf for supers, Jester for Sports, and Sabre Turbo (which can be found off the street) for muscles.
All 3 cars are very cheap, have decent speed, easy to learn on, have plenty if grip for their class, and still competitive to some extent.
There are quicker cars that you will eventually want to look into getting if you're serious on racing. There's other posts here that have reccomended lists for cars of all classes.
Also, don't be afraid to race by yourself in stock vehicles to see if you'll like a certain car before you buy it. Nothing's worse than spending $2.8 million on a super car just to hate it.

Zentorno and Dominator are better choices for supers and muscles. Also the Vagner isn't that expensive.

The Feltzer is a really nice one for sports. Also don't forget the Elegy in sports. It's flippin' free.

Turismo is a good choice, I always felt racing with harder cars are more helpful in the beginning. Such as the Dominator.

I personally think the Pisswasser Dominator would be great for muscle car races and it's not that expensive, And off course the Elegy is there for sportscar racing and it's free too. Maybe the Ocelot XA-21 will be a good supercar for you, although it's not really cheap, but it handles very well to be honest and it has 4WD. Unfortunately NODO doesn't have motorcycle racing otherwise i would really recommend the Pegassi Bati 801 because its really cheap and extremely fast too.

All great choices! I guess it depends on what you really want an easy car? A car the is the fastest in a race?

I can't remember, I know the Vagner is just over a million, but the Pariah doesn't cost that much either don't it? I was almost sure that car was in the 1 million range as well.
The best thing to do is save up around 3 million, it sounds like a lot but it won't take all that long to get in this game.
The best 3 cars are the Vagner for Super, Pariah for Sports, and Pisswasser Dominator for Muscle. Those are the 3 fastest and if your going to put time into learning racing lines and the learning the quarks of each respective car, then you may as well make it these 3 cars.
I'm pretty sure all these are relatively cheap, The Vagner I know is in the 1 million range and the Pariah I think is also in the 1 million range. The Dominator is free for some, though if you are new to the game then you wouldn't be a returning player. I don't know what the retail price of the car is, but it's a older car so I assume it should be relatively cheap.
As a bonus. For bikes gets a Bati 801. Bikes show up a lot in races and the Bati 801 is one of the top fastest bikes in the game. It can be brought for 12k I think, either 12 or 15k. Or it can be stolen off the street for free. The 801 can be fully modded for cheap as well.
Once you master holding a wheelie (which is a absolute must for the 801), then the 801 becomes the fastest straight line speed bike in the game I'd say pretty much bar none. The bike isn't the greatest in corners but people who mastered can do well enough in corners to be able totake advantage of the bikes speed once they hit straights. Generally Bati 801's and Shataro's tend to top the rankings of most every bike race. So for the price the Bati 801 is certainly worth the buy.

@justinlinch3 are you sure about being able to steal a Pegassi Bati801 from the street? i never was able to store it, the message says this vehicle cannot be stored, purchase high end vehicles at the website, i think you are talking about the Pegassi Ruffian, that one can be stored, but it's a meh motorcycle in terms of performance and customization. But still, $12.000 is peanuts for a motorcycle, i'll advice all new players and the ones that don't do too much motorcycle races to buy the Bati801 and have fun instead of wasting money for upgrades and resprays on a (race) bike from the street.

You should be able to, unless Rockstar changed something in one of the latest updates. I thought any car worth under 50k or so you store if you stole it, the Bati 801 falls well below that.
It's Rockstar though, their sole purpose in life is to make life harder for players under any means possible, so it wouldn't surprise me if you can't steal the 801 anymore. But you at least used to be able to, I know that for a fact because I'd done it in the past.
Still though, 12K for the normal version and 15K if you want the race liveries (both versions have same performance, so it's just cosmetic preference), it's still cheap as dirt anyway so it's not a huge money wall by any means.
Also the Ruffian isn't bad, it just don't have the speed to compete in races. It's basically a slower 801, that's what the Ruffian feels like to me anyway.

If your looking to start going thru corners at higher speeds I would go with the elegy rh8 just because of its grip thru the corners, and the best part free.
