Not sure exactly what point was proven, but I have to assume that since you've never given any of what I mentioned any thought that you must not be as big a computer geek as I am ;P
If it can be done, I'll tailor every piece of software I can to my own ends, from bios to operating system and beyond.. Hell, if it were possible I'd custom build every OS from a bootstrap level a-la Gentoo at it's initial release, that way I could tailor it to the hardware as well.
Shame that's not possible in my humble opinion.

Shame that's not possible in my humble opinion. No, I'm not. I moved on to other things after college and left that stuff behind. But I'm far more geeky about them than the majority of people who use computers. This isn't a competition about who is more geeky. It's a thread about thoughts on Windows 10. And I'm calling out the techies who bitch about Windows for not being powerful enough or customizable enough for their tastes. My point is, what do you expect? It's not designed for techies, it's designed for soccer moms and secretaries and people who spend majority of their time online looking at facebook and youtube. P.S. The main reason I don't fiddle with Windows deeper settings is because I am low class white trash. I can't afford to break my computers. If this laptop broke, I'd be out a computer till next February.

I never complained about Windows not being powerful enough (that's down to the hardware mostly) or customizable enough and I'm not sure I noticed anyone else doing that either.. As to who it's designed for, it's for everyone, not just the stereotypes that people like to bandy around such as the soccer moms and secretaries.. As I mentioned before, the only reason I'm still on Windows is gaming, which unfortunately for the majority of us geeky folks is dominated by DirectX and thus is biased in favour of Microsoft, if game developers stopped relying on it and used OpenGL instead, then we'd likely see a paradigm shift as gamers reformatted en-mass and installed their preferred distro.. Your P.S. is almost hilarious to me, you don't fiddle with deeper Windows settings for fear of breaking hardware? That hasn't been a risk in computing pretty much ever, in fact the only thing that used to break hardware consistently was overclocking and even that hasn't been a risk since 32-bit single core systems prior to the Athlon XP days due to thermal throttling/shutdown protocols.

Pretty much why I stopped messing around with settings. Replacing Windows wasn't cheap. Last OS I crashed was Win98, so yeah, that was awhile ago.

Do bluescreens even still exist? I haven't seen one since pre-sp3 XP..
Also, replacing Windows? reinstall from original media, don't need a new copy for every install ;P

I've seen a whole bunch of them on my sons computer ( my hand me down to him) over the previous week. Turned out both the motherboard and one stick of ram were faulty. Managed to get an unused 5 year old motherboard for a tenner on ebay and 4gb of ddr2 ram for another tenner. I'm a self confessed geek my self. And I much prefer Linux. I'm writing this from my Arch Linux install on my desktop PC. I can dual boot back and forth fairly rapidly as both Linux and Windows are on SSD's. I like playing around with small ARM devices like the Odroid XU3 I have one behind my TV and it lets me easily watch live footie and stream movies etc from my desktop to what I soon realised after purchase was a very dumb 'Smart TV'. I maintain Arch Linux packages that achieve this. Sorry for going so far off topic. I felt a strange need to declare my geekiness. As for windows 10. I'll wait until the dust settles and then give it a go. Still windows 7 atm and purely for games.

Windows 10, good update, for me, love it JUST cover up the camera with green duck tape and decline all security options of the update!
Yes I am that one person in the crew who thinks about that NSA and FBI stuff.

My Geography teacher's Win7 PC blue screened very recently whilst we were watching a video, me and my friend Tom looked at each other and were like 'eyyy, blue screen of death!'.

At the moment tho, OpenGL does lose a lot of frames compared to DirectX. The Hardware manufacturers need to put out more Low-Level Hardware stuff to make their platforms available for different programming APIs. Watch Austin Evans' MacBook gaming video, shows you the results ^-^

so, um, Chrome stopped working in the update. Tried to reinstall, it just hangs on the launcher with a Chrome "Downloading" window doing sweet FA.
Yay.

I just noticed there are two current windows 10 threads. Well I changed my mind about installing it (from the other thread) Well I said I wouldn't upgrade for a while. But after about 6 GTA crashes in the last 48 hours I thought 'What the hell'. I made a whole drive image of Windows 7 (just in case) and then upgraded to 10. Took about 20-25 minutes. I'll report back whether it seems any better or worse. Not sure if its been mentioned but you don't have to wait if you still only have a 'reserved' copy. Just go to www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and download and run the Media Creation Tool. Then choose Upgrade now. Now to test GTA Online First opinions Too flat Too white I've had to mess around in C:\Windows\Resources\Themes to get coloured title bars and will have to do some more looking to see if I can reduce the white. Classic Shell has been setup for a old school menu. Seem snappy but just looks all wrong with the totally different look of old programs and new 'apps' GTA didn't crash in about 2 hours of play, so that's a good start, but I'm thankful that's all I'm using windows for. Makes my eyes hurt: plain and simple. How hard would it be to allow customisation. Windows used to.

__Gandhi__ Might be worth looking at this, or alternatively just patching the uxtheme.dll and looking around for a suitable dark theme.

Cheers Method but I'd already done most of the tweaks on that page bar the patching the uxtheme.dll. I was too tired to type more last night But enabling the hidden dark theme only exposes the disjointed nature of 'programs' vs 'apps' more as it only affects the 'apps'. I'm sure that with a bit more research I could lower the eye strain more, and probably will. But IMHO this sort of customisation should involve a few mouseclicks not editing system files and adding registry entries. Granny should be able to do it ! Even Windows 3.1 let you customise far more than Windows 10 so you could have this if you really wanted. Anyway it's just my first impressions. I really don't like the default look and changing it shouldn't be a struggle. But then I'm old and resistant to change

Oh I agree, the lack of theme and style customization in more recent versions of Windows is frankly laughable, thankfully third party options are available, if limited.. A quick browse around found me a theme I could probably use but whether it fits what you're looking for is another story.
