Oh I agree, the lack of theme and style customization in more recent versions of Windows is frankly laughable, thankfully third party options are available, if limited.. A quick browse around found me a theme I could probably use but whether it fits what you're looking for is another story. I've had a look at the patching options (uxtheme.dll). The in memory patch sounds like it has bugs and I don't really want to patch system files when the whole reason for installing it was the hope of better stability in GTA5. But my stability hopes were dashed this morning as the game crashed twice. I may just copy the Windows 7 image back onto the drive and then upgrade again sometime before the free upgrade year has passed. I suppose I'm spoilt on Linux as I can customise the look with ease. I was a little surprised that Windows has regressed so much in this regard. I never tried 8 but guess that was the same ?

Beyond XP, visual customization has gone downhill for sure, 7 was limited, 8.1 slightly more-so, and from the sounds of it 10 is another step backwards..
As to the patching options, the in-memory patch is in my experience spotty at best, the system file patch is the better option and though I see the odd mention of Windows updates causing problems I've never yet had any issue on a system I've patched from XP onwards.
Sorry to hear you're still having issues with the crashing, was hoping 10 might fix it for you.

I'm being picky really because I'll rarely be using the programs I find ugly anyway. But sometimes things just bug me. I've come across this MSStyler which lets you make your own msstyle files. Came across it in a post on technet by what seems to be a Microsoft employee recommending it along with patching UxStyle! social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/e7d80b7d-9eaa-421b-95d6-a19cb48c80a3/custom-color-theme-questions?I'm also a tad disappointed the game is not 100% stable on 10 but can't say I'm surprised.

Talking about customisation, I can't seem to change the log-in screen when you boot up

__Gandhi__ UltraUXThemePatcher is what I used from XP to 7 and still in 8.1, works a charm, MSStyler I've heard of but never touched, with the themes available already, manual edits aren't necessary for me. Dim If it's just the log in screen, hope this helps, covers 7/8(.1)/10.

I fear either you are calling something by the wrong name, or you're not looking at the same article I posted. Look at that article title again, then compare it with this. The original article is log in, what I just posted is lock. The lock screen has no input area, the log in screen does, and as an aside, the log in screen on Windows 8(.1) doesn't have an image, only a solid colour, and I'd be surprised if that was different in 10.
