Interesting video from The Know rumors that the Nintendo NX might dump optical discs and return to their roots, reviving the use of cartridges.
This is interesting. Optical discs has been the rage in consoles ever since the success of Sony's Playstation in 1997 that ran CD's. Yes CD's was attempted by Philip's and Saga but Sony was the ones that really made the medium popular. Since the Playstation all consoles has since run optical discs. Playstation 2, XBOX, and Wii ran DVD's, GameCude ran Micro DVD's, and WiiU, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, XBOX 360 and XBOX One all runs on Blu-Ray.
So for almost two decades optical discs has been the norm. Everyone has speculated that the future beyond optical disc has to be digital download. But is it? One downside of digital only is it does potentially limit the market especially in places like the United States where bandwish caps or just flat out poor internet service comes into play. Clearly connectivity is still a issue, after all look at the backlash Microsoft got when they said the XBOX ONE would need daily internet checks to run.
Now digital is certainly looking to be the future at some point, but maybe now still isn't the best time. So lets assume that Sony and/or Microsoft next round of consoles is dropping between 2018-2020 and digital on it's own is still a bit of a ways off (2025 if not 2030) meaning for now we still need a physical media, is Nintendo on to something?
People has speculated before on consoles using USB or removable flash drives, and really cartridges fall into this same category. I mean cartridges are a lot cheaper now then back in the N64 days, loading times will be severely reduced with cartridge of optical disc, while Blu-Ray discs are strong you'd have to think cartridges would still be even more durable, and consoles themselves would last longer. Lets face it the lasers consoles need to read the discs is one of the top failures in consoles since optical disc arrived. Optical disc also causes a lot of heat requiring the assistance of fans to help cool consoles. A cartridge console would need fewer fans as it causes less heat, and no possibility at all of laser failure means consoles could potentially last you decades.
Now The Know mentioned Nintendo using a 32GB cartridge, with Sony and Microsoft both running 50GB Dual Layer Blu-Ray discs I hope this is not true. Nintendo doesn't need to be behind the curb again. But still, what do you think? Could the revival of cartridge actually be the future? Sure, the Calekovision (I know I spelled that wrong) was a flop, but those guys was shady from the get go. But now, this is Nintendo.
So, your thoughts? I think there are a lot of pluses to going back to cartridge if it's now affordable.
