For me switching to controller wasn't all about getting more raw pace than on keyboard, it helps with having smoother and more precise inputs, which helped get my consistency up quite a lot. Once I got used to it my pace did improve from having that extra control. Also I think most high level guys will agree consistency is usually better than having the best lap. I've won many races simply from not crashing or making mistakes

Weird thing, the exact opposite thing happened to me. xD
1000 hours in the game with controller (360/PS4/PC), struggling hard with the right stick, found my piece with kb/m a few days ago.

I'm in the process of trying to adapt to a controller, it's been my 2nd day racing with it. Iv'e barely used controllers in my life so it's very new to me. I can feel the change of consistency that you all talked about, but using the right stick like I use the mouse is close to impossible for me. I'm very dependant on the mouse when racing with the keyboard, to see what's going to come next and have a better view. I choke so much with the controller now just because I can't see what's ahead of me. And when I try to use the right stick to replace the mouse I just can't use it smoothly like a mouse and I constantly have to think about it which damages my ability to race. I'm either gonna have to learn how to use that right stick or just go back to the good old keyboard.
Do you controller guys race without using the right stick and constantly changing the camera position? Because I find it very hard to do. Maybe I'm too used to it. Nevertheless I'm still going to try racing with the controller for some more time.

I race with keyboard but without the mouse, i used to use mouse but i changed my key controlls to the numpad area, because i prefere my right hand for controlls, it was weird to lose the vision ability but at the same time its 1 less thing to do and you can focus more on the racing, i got used to it and it doesnt affect my driving (exept when learning a new stunt track with low vision). I think the same might apply to controller, just focus on the driving and later on when you feel more comfortable with it try using the right if you want. Also maybe you are using the low camera angle, put it to high if so (display settings> vehicle camera hight)

I had a decent pace for being a keyboard scrub. Then I bought an xbone controller, and realized "holy shit this is different". I basically accepted that "I don't know how to drive in this game", and started from scratch. It took me only a couple days to get back to my pace, and by now I'm very sure I exceeded my kb/m pace by alot.

Basically, I'm still in the process of learning to drive all over again but I'm much more confident with the controller now than I was before. Not sure if I'm faster yet, but I'm getting there.

The main advantage I see for a controller over the keyboard/mouse is the analog stick for steering. I feel it gives the ability to turn a lot or a little, and it's easier to control the correct angle in the turns, instead the all or nothing steering that can be had on the keyboard. That being said, I do use the m/k combo for driving if I need to have more precise shooting ability, in that case the lack of precision in the corners is made up for by more precise aiming to save my ass.
In the end though, whatever you're more comfortable with is probably best, unless you want to put in the time to learn a new control setup.
