I guess we'll all just have to wait for Broughy's testing to see which movie really is the best.

I don't think I even saw a movie this year. What an amazing outside life I have.

Grand Budapest Hotel for me. Positively hilarious.. That would've been my number 6 if I made my list longer. Hilarious, heart-warming, great visual design. I loved it. Top 5 you say? 1.Birdman 2.Interstellar 3.Captain America:The Winter Soldier 4.GoTG 5.X-men:Days of Futures Past
Unpopular opinion. I thought the new hobbit was god awful

Unpopular opinion. I thought the new hobbit was god awful [/span][/quote] Yes! I was so bored throughout that. It was a ten minute battle scene stretched to two and a half hours. [/quote] {Spoiler} the thing that i was most annoyed about was Thorin's "redemption" from him being an asshole to being a friend happened so quickly that i didn't even feel bad that he died

Just noticed the poll. Other: Calvary. My thoughts on each Interstellar - flawed but generally fantastic. Birdman - not seen yet, will be watching it this weekend probably. Gone Girl - not seen yet. General consensus is it's great but one guy whose critical opinions I trust the most said it was rubbish. X-Men: Days of Future Past - meh. The kids I took to see it thought it was okay. Guardians of the Galaxy - really fun but I won't be watching it again. Boyhood - utterly wonderful, like rediscovering a photo album you haven't seen in years and remembering lots of little moments in your life that at the time seemed small but in retrospect were actually huge. How to Train Your Dragon 2 - better than expected and a decent family outing to the cinema. Won't be watching it again though. The Grand Budapest Hotel - hilarious, emotional, beautiful to look at. I loved it. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - It's okay. It's a brave film, spending more time with the apes than the humans, but despite its best efforts to be as serious as it can it has lots of silly moments in it. Captain America:The Winter Soldier - yawn. Sorry. I thought this was dreadfully dull. Edge of Tomorrow - better than expected, despite the lack of logic in its convoluted plot. The Hobbit:The Battle of the Five Armies - very dull. Under the Skin - Excellent. Utterly creepy, atmospheric, and thoughtful. Even better than the book. American Sniper - not seen. I won't be seeing it at the cinema but I might catch it on rental. The Fault in our Stars - not seen, probably won't ever. The MCU took 2 very brave leaps in making one film based around a more political sense in The Winter Soldier. and one being action packed with a more...I'd like to say Deadpoolish type humour. I loved both films, The Winter Soldier in my eyes at least was better than Avengers. GoTG was incredible, i can't wait to see if they manage to cross over GoTG and The Avengers in the Infinity wars. This year will be fun with the MCU Avengers:AoU is coming out and they are taking a more darker approach at that, and these leaked sony emails get me even more excited because some detailed Marvel being allowed to use Spidey in the upcoming movies. Spectacular.

You've got it all wrong. LEGO movie beats all I hated that one too. Sorry. I couldn't stand its constant barrage of stuff happening very loudly and quickly. [/unpopular opinion] I really liked it because of how satirical the comedy was, it wasn't much like other kids movies. Will Arnett as Batman stole the movie for me honestly. The movie had some kind of charisma that i just loved

I'm generally not a fan of comic book or super hero films, especially Marvel, so I'm not fussed about any of these new announced films. [/yet another unpopular opinion - I'm a real downer in this thread. Sorry ] Marvel makes me happy that they're constantly coming out with new things we haven't seen before. one of the best things is, is that you don't need much background info on the comics to like the movies, they're cleverly written and generally fun apart from Iron man 2 and 3 and the Thor standalone movies otherwise i love them

[/okay I'll stop annoying everyone now] for a second i thought you were talking about The Amazing Spiderman 2, that i was gonna put in the poll to see if anyone would choose it so i can ask broughy to kick from crew .

I didn't watch that one. I watched the first The Amazing Spider-Man though. It wasn't my choice, it was for my cousin's kids who I was babysitting, and in retrospect I wish I hadn't watched it at all. the first made me excited to what could happen next and if they'd kill off Gwen Stacey like in the comics, then they did and i didn't feel bad, she was an unlikable character and so is Andrew Garfields character that movie.

I can't remember much about it except me thinking "WTF? Oh come on!" at that moment near the end when the cranes all lined up perfectly. Yeah, bad choice by writers, but the first is the highlight of that series. It's likely coming to an end. I'm excited to see the Suicide Squad though, Margot Robbie, Will Smith and Jared Leto in a movie together damn.

Well I've seen it now and with its really fun premise, promise of some black humour poking fun at Hollywood, technical prowess, and odd-ball surrealism I really wanted to like Birdman a lot but I couldn't. In fact I found it irritating. A shame because I really like Iñárritu's 21 Grams and Amores Perros although with this now joining Babel, and Biutiful the balance between films I like and dislike has now tipped into the latter category. I know I'm in the minority and people won't like to hear that. Ooh Birdman is so post-modern, it's art imitating life, marvel at its introspection and long takes which have been sewn together seamlessly, now check out this flight of fancy which comes out of nowhere, and the musical score made entirely from drums. Give me a pat on the back! With its long takes and swooping camera work it does a good job technically, and Keaton and Norton give it their everything so they're enjoyable to watch, but the general idea of it as a biting satire of the creative industries is cliched and slight and the surreal and quirky touches do nothing to help its conceit. It thinks it's much cleverer than it really is.

Yeah, driftin isn't the only one who didn't like Birdman. I had to really force myself to stay and watch the 2nd half of the movie. I'll simply say it was well made, and well acted but just made me feel more uneasy than entertained.
I just watched Boyhood though and that was excellent. Although I had a hard time relating to anyone with such a dreary outlook on life, the brother vs sister rivalry was exactly like mine. It was fascinating to see these characters and actors age and mature 12 years from beginning to end. What a crazy gamble to hire these 7 year old kids and hope they can still act well enough for their parts as they aged, but they did. Probably the best coming of age film ever made.
