Spent an hour designing my character, walked for 2 minutes, got mauled to death by an impossible to kill wolf before being placed in some sort of hub world with no explanation. This game is going to be tough for someone with little to no experience of the Souls games but I will persevere. It's going to be a gruelling ride but I think I will like this very much. If you're still playing this later and or decide to stream this, I'd love to join you and take a look

An hour and a half repeating the same area over and over, each time chipping away and learning a little bit more. It's brutally difficult but when I die it feels like my fault, not the game's. The controls are really crisp (although the lock on system's a bit wonky occasionally), the animation, the timing and combat mechanics are fluid and wonderful and when you beat an area that you felt was impossible before you feel pretty damn awesome.... then you get brutally murdered in the next arena! Haha.
Brilliant so far even though I've barely dipped my toes into.

Haha. Brilliant so far even though I've barely dipped my toes into. Looks like you're having the exact same experience as me. I've never felt like the game was cheating me in combat or anything, but the camera got me a few times. One enemy jumped out from behind a wall on my right, so naturally a swing the camera to face him. The problem is I kept mashing the lock-on button at the same time, which swung the camera back to the direction my character was facing. This cycle repeated a few times and finally ended with the enemy putting a sword through my face. Lesson learned. I also played a good 10 mins with three different characters before I decided on which look I liked the most. Character creation always bogs me down. Really enjoying the parts I got to play, almost wish I wasn't on vacation so I could go play some more!

The mechanics took a little while to get used to and you have to be insanely patient in order to get through the game. Otherwise i love this game just wish i had more time to play this game but exams are coming up.
