I found this video I made a long time ago and posted to my old YouTube channel when I used to play the San Andreas Multiplayer mod with a community that has since dispersed and is basically dead. It brings back fun memories, and it made me realise how much better I am now than I was before. Here it is:

I also found this, an old racetrack map I made but lost when my old laptop broke... It took me months to make, destroying bits of it and remaking it in different ways.. I think when I finished it it used over 10k objects.

You made me have to go dig through my old videos! Here's one featuring me and Will_Zigg who also races with NODO! Probably one of the most intense races I ever drove on SAMP. I think 9:13 in the video is a great example of just how hard I was driving, don't think I took that line on that track one other time in my entire time on that game. Also 10:06 is a trick I don't think I ever told poor Zigg, that sidewalk has no speed limit while the road kept you below a certain speed, that's how I caught and passed him! www.youtube.com/watch?t=10&v=ul-pWiHZXsMHere's a good example of how fast we got, I'm pretty sure we had some of the fastest people in the world at the time racing with us. youtu.be/75WA72CdQQ0?t=433Whenever I went to dedicated racing servers I was only ever beat in time trials by regulars on tracks that I didn't know. Then again, it's a game over a decade old. Lol.

I remember SA's driving being weird as hell, so it's possible most of the challenge comes from there, but otherwise it looks super simple compared to what we do these days to be honest.

I enjoy racing on San Andreas, especially because you don't have to deal with using curbs to get the fastest lap, and track making was better because the MTA Editor let you do so much more than the Creator. I don't think the driving was weird though, some cars were very challenging to drive around tracks however, like the Super GT.

I always wondered how many people here played SAMP or MTA, because I met G and S for Life on an MTA server in the middle of last year but most of my time playing SAMP and MTA was in just one small community since 2010. I really miss it a lot, and NODO reminds me of it so much except for there being less drama here and it's a lot larger of a community. I think my ultimate wish for GTA V on the PC, though, is MTA: V or V:MP. Either would be amazing. Just the ability to host servers where we can add scripts and custom maps / gamemodes. Imagine a NODO racing server with like a 1,000 player limit all playing at the same time, with no Cloud Simulator before loading up a race and a better economy for buying items and cars!

I remember SA's driving being weird as hell, so it's possible most of the challenge comes from there, but otherwise it looks super simple compared to what we do these days to be honest. I don't think the physics made a huge difference, it was just that the world was so low poly that there wasn't much difference between any given flat intersection in a city. Whereas like we've seen with Broughy's LSGP, every corner is different. Not to say that there weren't sections of SA with varied terrain. But the huge difference between top level SA racing and top level V racing is the speed of the cars. There simply isn't a car in SA that accelerates like the Zentorno, so we had much more time to think about our lines. And ignoring supercars like the Zentorno, it still feels like you're moving faster in V than you ever did in SA. No matter what car. It's like touring cars vs F1. If you raced a Sabre in V and a Sabre in SA you would probably only notice the geometry of V's world being better and everything moving faster in V. The physics themselves aren't hugely different. But SAMP also had lag-slamming, which IMO made for some of the best free-roam gameplay I've ever had. For actual racing I would say lagslamming is about on par with regular racing, probably not better.

Yeah, that is exactly why I plan on buying V for the PC. I remember playing on SAMP race servers that had 80 people. You started last when you joined, if you won you started first in the next leg of the sprint. Collisions were on and it was insanely fun. If someone can get that kind of experience into V I will buy it in a heartbeat. But if it's just as buggy and unplayable as the console version then I'll be stuck reminiscing over the times when SAMP had more than 10 people online.

It's a consequence of SAMP not having any kind of lag compensation. Where your car is on everyone else's screen is where you were (your ping + their ping) milliseconds ago. So if you're driving along side someone's "lag image", on their screen they are actually a few car lengths ahead of you. You can use this to your advantage to hit people without damaging your car by pulling ahead of them and swerving. You could imagine a car ahead of theirs and swerve at it. I just kind of got a feel for how far ahead to hit, never imagined a car or anything. I don't think I used this trick in any of the videos posted so far, but this also means you can use other cars as walls to help you turn. I do this track a lot into turn 1 on this track, but the best example is right here: The reason this hit didn't affect his car is that for him, I'm actually about a car length behind of hitting. What he saw was just me taking that corner unnaturally fast.

haydugjr I get it now. Was this a trick only scumbags sometimes used to get ahead, or was clean racing just not a thing then and everyone was trying to do it? That's of course talking about the intetional wrecking of an opponent, not using their car to speed yourself up. That to me seems more like a passable exploit of the game, sort of like curb boosting.

Well the server that all of my racing videos come from was actually a cops and robbers server. That video of me knocking down bikes is when I played as a cop. Most people thought they were invincible against a lone cop in a car because I couldn't pop their tires without a passenger. There were maybe three cops on the server who knew how to lagslam. When it comes to racing though, we were all clean for the most part. Pretty much no different than how you've seen me race on V. You would get slammed if you were blocking like an asshole but we stayed clean for the most part. In that video of me chasing down Zigg from the back of the grid I actually started last because I lagslammed someone in qualifying. He had crashed and swerved across the track to keep me passing him, and the admin only switched as I took him out haha. So driving dirty was untolerated enough that the creator of the first ever racing tournament on that server was forced to start last over one incident. Haha.

Luckily they fixed the lag for shooting in 0.3x but idk if it is fixed on cars.
