So the Hunter isn't actually released yet, but there are air cargo missions that let you test drive it, as well as Adversary Modes you can test drive it. Supposedly the Hunter will have flares, but it's minigun will only be usable via a second player. So as a single player your options are Straight Fire Missile Burst, which I'm assuming will be pretty useless. In the Adversary Mode it seemed hard enough just to hit other Hunters with those rockets. So what will that burst fire do in free roam against jets? Your second option is the same type of homing missiles that the Savage has. But your best weapon, the machine gun, you'll need a second player to operate it. So if your solo, well tough luck.
On the other hand the Savage has the Continuous Homing Missile Fire (same as the Hunter) and it allows the driver to man the mounted explosive machine gun.
In armor they don't seem to be to far apart, the Savage takes 2 rocket hits and the Hunter is said to take 3.
So I guess the question here is, rockets + flares but no machine gun VS rockets + machine gun but no flares. Which one would you go for?
Is having the ability of flares worth the sacrifice of losing the mounted explosive gun?
I've sure we all know how deadly those explosive guns can be, so I thought that this might be a interesting comparison.
-----
My opinion, I really don't know. I can't really see the flares offering that big of a bonus, it can help against a homing launcher but if there is a hostile jet or fighter plane in the lobby, well that are unlikely to use rockets anyway, they'll likely go straight for the machine guns unless maybe if your driving a Molotok which only has normal guns. But I'm going on the assumptions your coming head to head against a Lazer or Hydra, or even a Rouge or Nakoda (when it releases). In that situation flares really won't help you, and the main defense you would have (explosive machine gun) you would unable to use without a second player.
I'm having the same feeling about missions as well, some missions really benefit from the Savage having the explosive round gun and AI's are a terrible shot with missiles, so flares isn't even needed in the first place. In for example the Smuggler mission where Ron gives you a hunter by default, I'd always rather take my Savage. Destroying those signal jammers are so much easier with the Savage's gun compared to the Hunter's missiles. There are several missions I use the Savage on, this is just one example.
I will buy a Hunter just to have one, but as for which I'd use the most, especially as a solo player much of the time, personally I think I'd still prefer the Savage in general as I can see the potential aid of having access to that machine gun outweighing having the aid of on board flares. But that's just me.
Which do you guys think would be better?

The gun is fantastic, but I don't think either helicopter is equipped to really dogfight. They're both terribly slow, I think the hunter might be slower but I don't know this for sure, and their armor isn't impressive either way. I think in terms of useability, having a free-aiming gunner makes the Hunter far more practical, provided you have someone to fill that seat. The main weakness of these two helis is that their climb speed is really pathetic, not that helis are practical for combat vs players to begin with.
And yeah I'm in the same boat as you, I'll probably pick it up just to have it in the collection, just like the Valkyrie which has even less going for it.

That is true. I personally try to avoid dog fighting as much as possible, I was just thinking that if I was ever put in that situation, and was given the choice between the two, which would I rather be in? But I'm certainly not going out of my way to start a war in either.

I think overall the Savage is a better helicopter. I mean, both handle like a Tug to begin with, and they can be easily blown up, especially the Hunter. The thing I like more is that the Savage has the explosive machine gun and that gives it a lot more of benefit. It's just my opinion.

Don't forget there will probably be engine and handling upgrades for the hunter which will hopefully make it better than the one you use in mission

Doesn't the hunter also have bombs? I think I heared that somewhere. I've been trying to make use of them in some bunker missions but with planes it's quite difficult and I am not that sold on the Tula. If there was a heli with bombs I'd highly appreciate that for some occasions.

If there was a heli with bombs I'd highly appreciate that for some occasions. Yea Hunter has bombs, but I easily wreck those missions with the Savage anyway. Hell I almost never use the vehicles provided by Ron, I walk into my hangar and depending on the mission I grab my Savage or my Buzzard. Downed Aircraft Mission - Personal Buzzard. Rooftop Mission - Personal Buzzard. Sea Diving Mission - Personal Buzzard. Titan Mission - Personal Savage. Destroy Base Missions - Personal Savage. Destroy Jammers/Trucks Missions - Personal Savage. The only time I do use Ron's vehicles is when he gives me a fighter jet/combat plane, and even then I have my own. I just use his to I don't have to pay the 1K insurance if I need to bail out and sky dive to the package. The Seabreeze, Tula, unarmed Buzzard, Hunter, Ron can take all that shit and shove it. I mean look how easy the Titan mission is with the Savage, those Buzzard's don't stand a chance. And I'm not even a pro pilot by any stretch of the imagination. I'm capable enough to do the job but 9 times outta 10 I'm getting wrecked in dogfights. Then try that mission with the Mogul the game gives you. Huge difference.

I tried that method, too. Both the Savage and the Hydra work pretty well and I kinda enjoy it that way as well, it feels completely different to what you usually have to do.

I haven't tried Hydra yet. Usually not a fan of it's VTOL mode as I find it really slow and cumbersome to try move around in. But that's just personal preference.

I get what you mean, I'm mostly using the Savage for the same reason, though the issue seems to be more about how long it takes for the Hydra to build up momentum or decrease it in vtol. In that mission it works out pretty well and it feels pretty unique to handle the plane in first person.

Some people are beasts with the Hydra though, I just don't think it suits me the best.

The Savage is far more practical to use IMO. I just dont understand those who say otherwise.
I mean, lets be honest; How often do we get to use the bombs and barrage rockets? To me the only advantage the Hunter has is its flares. Anything else I would NOT call an advantage. Because for me, the most important thing for me is the explosive minigun. If I need to have a second player to operate it? Fck that. I dont even find bombs nor the barrage useful at all. They are, at most, simply a thing for “cool factor”. As for flares, well, I think its better to just git gud at dodging homer rockets.
If you like the Hunter, thats ok to me. Its when you say that the Hunter shits on the Savage that I would counterargue.

I've equipped my hunter with the gas bombs. Actually really useful against ground targets as it spreads out killing players in the area. I've killed more people using the hunter with gas bombs than I have with any plane with explosive bombs and the hunter has only just come out!
