I'm thinking that it would be cool if R* set up the race positioning based on who picked their car and was ready to go first. This would have the added bonus of encouraging people to stop sitting there doing the jerk animation while the clock SLOWLY counts down I mean really, even if the race is locked to one car some people just sit there and wait for the timer to finish. I say start them at the back of the pack and let the ones that are ready to go take the pole position. Do you think that would work, would it be unfair in any way? Thoughts?

That is a great idea! Would speed up things for sure! You should tell ROCKSTAR about that.

I've been trying this over the past few days. I'd say I am placed more up front but this doesn't work always. I used to let the timer go, because on olg gen it happend often that when people immediately pressed ready some people didn't have enough time to choose their car. The timer went down too quickly for the people that have slow connection to choosing car. I think for every person that presses ready, 8 seconds go off the timer for the people that aren't ready.

A very promising idea, indeed.
However, on lastGen console PS3 I had some issues with extra long loading sequences. Sometimes they lasted so long that I was thrown immediately to the betting screen. I was not able to choose a car and I ended up in the pre-selected one. Not sure if that is related to my connection (which is rather good) or to server issues.
So I guess technical limits would not allow the implementation of this great idea.

I do like this idea, although I myself often spend a considerable amount of time in those selection screens, too, before I am ready. That's because there's no way around it if you want to choose your car based on other people's choices or if you want to place bets in which case you just have to check other player's bets because the betting system is so horribly broken. Obviously, I have neither of those concerns in NoDo races as I only bet if there's a chance to win.

I start in last place 9 out of 10 times. The system is rigged, I swear.

I'd like to see it be an option. Like you could have Ready Order, Random (default), and for playlists have Finishing Order with normal and reverse. Normal starting the previous race's winner on pole, and Reverse starting the previous winner in last, and so on throughout the other ranks. Another one that'd be useful for racing crew events in particular would be the ability to assign starting positions per player, but that's something that wouldn't really be used outside of racing crews, so I doubt R* would spend time on something like that. I hope this all makes sense. I'm kinda tired right now.

I don't know for certain but I think the grid is done by who connects the quickest when the job begins to launch, I have a virgin fibre optic in my new flat and often find myself at the front of the grid, which never used to happen.
If the win/loss ratio was a better system, the best at the back worst at the front would be good. The one thing they should definitely do is allow us to set up the grid, trying to fit 30 players on some track designs can be a real pain, surely it wouldn't be that hard for them to implement either?

I think this is true. It seems that at the joining section of the lobby, people get placed based on connection speeds. I used to have 5U/20D. I would get placed usually close to the top back in the PS3 days. My ISP bumped me up to 25/25 randomly and it's rare if I'm ever not at the top in the lobby and at the start of the race. In the back of my mind, I've been wondering if has had anything to do with internet connections. I honestly believe this is it. Maybe so that slower and possibly laggy players can be less disruptive to other players? Ever notice how some players can crash one second and then be perfectly fine the next? I'm guessing it's by design for less disruption.

I'm guessing it's by design for less disruption. We used this method for our crew vs crews on 360 about 6 months ago. It most certainly is based on who connects first. Twilicane is on a cali connection which is notoriously garbage(sorry its true even cali people say it) and attempting to play with mostly people from a different continent. That is why he is almost always last. Twi and I are almost always side by side(way at the fucking back) on the grid in European hosted lobbies. Then late night american lobbies its a bit more random and fair.
