Hello all, I was wondering why I see so many cars on the curbs during races, especially with more experienced, faster drivers. What's the true reasoning behind this? One of my friends says you get more speed on them, and another said it's due to the racing line through corners. But quite honestly, I see no reason why you should be on the curbs to begin with, as they slow me down a lot, and also can bring poles down along and cause major pile-ups. It may just be me, but racing on the curbs is a useless technique that doesn't deserve a spot in any kind of racing on GTA Online.
Now in the case the curbs do happen to grant you more speed, is that something on Rockstar's list to fix in the future?

They give you considerable amount of more speed, and should definitely be used if you can use them as they give you a large advantage, and it has been very controversial. Other crews and people in this crew as well do not like this and in the case of many of them, they ban going on curbs. In nodo, many people like to block off the curbs in their races with barriers, but since it is legal, I suggest you go for them if you want to be competetive. Although most people in nodo use them, many of them don't like it, and use them just because they have to to be competitve. Many times the racing community tried to reach out to rockstar to get it fixed and have never got a response, and I doubt it will ever get fixed.

There is a thread on its legality along with off roads. You can do what you want. However it is a gentlemens agreement to not abuse them for the most part.

People who would like to lower the skill ceiling will argue that you shouldn't "abuse" them, IMO you should start practicing how to do it now. In five years when the realistic racing purists have moved on, only the curb "abusers" will be left with world records and a shot at being the fastest in the world. Start practicing it now.

Personally, I do not "look" for kerbs per se. If they are on my line, that I would normally take, then I will take them

Best explained here by shaggy
I don't have a problem with it in non-contact, because non-contact is all about gaining edges to go that little bit faster.
But I fucking hate people doing it in races, weaving around the track like maniacs, swerving into anyone who is by their side so they can get to their precious curbs and/or carelessly knocking over poles. For the most part it's causes crashes but is acceptable in NoDo.

If you hit a kerb or bump in the road you go faster. Aim for kerbs.

I used to use curbs a lot, but I find them to often be a risk because things don't spawn all the time and you'll end up hitting them. They are not NEEDED to use in order to be competitive, I can prove it any day.
Instead, I've gradually actually learned the roads of the game because there are bumps in it that provide a nice boost if you drive over them perfectly. This would naturally take a lot longer because you basically need to memorize most of the roads in the game and how they are layed out but if you do enough races it'll just come as second nature.. Plus, you aren't going to hit poles that will screw up your fellow racers.
Basically, if curbs are a part of a nice line through a turn then I will use them, but other than that I will always use the bumps in the road.

I make the curbs I hit be apart of my racing line most of the time. There are a few that are just so wide open and blantant I will go for them like the LSGP main straight but mostly I aim to hit small beneficial bumps and avoid as many large bumps as possible for maximum speed and control. Weaving slows you down so going out of your way for curbs outside of your racing line probably isnt very beneficial anyways.

The whole point of racing is seeing how quickly you can go around a track. If this way is by taking Kerbs, then I can't complain. I only take Kerbs when it is on my racing line.
