Thanks to an uncomfortably long flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Las Vegas, USA I finally finished my first Discworld book. Naturally this was "The Colour of Magic." I gotta say that I'm sorry that it took the author's recent death to finally get me to start them, but I'm really glad I got around to it. I found this reading order guide online, but it's not really helpful when there are so many novel-lines to follow: I really want to move over and read "Mort" because I really enjoyed the character of Death, but at the same time, I want to see what happens next to our heroes in the first book. Anyone with some experience with the books have any suggestions and where to go next? I want to jump, but I want the story/characters to still make sense.

Welcome to Discworld then! The Light Fantastic begins just where The Colour of Magic ends, so only because of that I would recommend to continue with that one. Normally, the novels have a conclusion and the next novel in a group does not pick up just where the previous one ended. It's just a different story with the same main characters where major changes that took place in previous novels still exist. The two first Rincewind novels are sort of an exception in that regard. As you already know, you aren't really restricted nor forced to follow the publishing order. My general recommendation is to pick the first novel of different 'groups' and then continue the path of your favourite ones. Mine happens to be the Death too btw - good choice!

I would echo the first part of this post, Light Fantastic is the direct follow on. My first book was Mort which strictly speaking is the 4th book so if you really want to read some more of Death exploits it won't harm your experience of you read this right after Light Fantastic. In fact it will most likely want you to read more Pratchett books. After you are done with Mort you don't have to read them in strict order, however, I found doing broke things up nicley and gave a good mix of characters seeing the world from different locations and watching the world evolve. Also you might even find a new favourate as there are so many great recurring character groups. If this is not for you and you get into certain characters then just read them in character order at least - so equal rites should be read before wyrd sisters as both are tales of granny weatherwax et al. If memory serves there is the odd referance here and their to other events or characters from other novels popping up but nothing bad enough to ruin it. I wish I could read them again for the 1st time. Hf

I started with Small Gods two years ago because a friend recommended it to me and I really loved it. So I decided to begin with The Colour of Magic and after that one following the publishing order. I prefer this method because I'd like to follow what was Pratchett thinking in every moment and also because it's less possible to get bored about the same characters (if that's possible). Currently I'm reading Guards! Guards!, but it's been awhile since the last time I read it because I'm not in the mood right now.

So thanks to your suggestions I ended up hopping into The Light Fantastic next and I'm pretty happy with the decision so far. To be fair, I don't exactly know what I'm missing from Mort, but I'm already a third of the way through the book and I'm very pleased.

Maybe discworld fan right here, read then ask at least twice. The city watch books are the best for me personally though.
