I use the closest view all the time. I drive by looking at what's ahead of me and not at my car so the closest view allows me to do this. When I use the furthest away cam the car is in the middle which disorientates me a little. However for drifting on GTA I use the furthest away cam, helps me a little bit.

Normal, just viewing the car, but if its to close i move to the next one up, usually just move the camera, so i see the roof of the car more when im driving, so it allows me to have a better view of whats ahead, or hidden by the hill, upwards, or downwards, Edit:Cause if left as is, your just left with looking at the back bumper of your car, and not much on what is ahead,

I also have to have first-person perspectives in Grand Turismo and Forza, but third-person in GTA.
I usually drive at 2x zoom, and occasionally at 3x if I don't realise it's set. I didn't know about the camera height though; I'll have to look at that next time I'm on.
