I know it's quite unpopular, but I loved GTA IV. I felt really absorbed in the city, and the storyline was good too. Going out with friends was a feature I liked a lot. I also enjoyed the driving in it, and the overall dark mood didn't annoy me. It was good to play in a more colorful Liberty City with TBOGT though.
But I also spent a lot of time playing Vice City (I loved the 80s atmosphere!), and even more playing San Andreas (I finished the storyline like 15 times). Getting back to Vice City with VCS was awesome as well.
It's quite hard to find my favorite GTA because I enjoyed them all, and they all had flaws. I kinda regret that you don't spend that much time going out with your friends in GTA V for example, or the fact that you can't go to fast-food restaurants anymore.

Truth be told, I've never completed the main story in any GTA game(!), as I'd always get sidetracked simply by dicking around and just getting into all sorts of mischief. So for me, my favourite GTA game has to be San Andreas. My first memories of that include breaking away from the city as soon as possible (probably after like the second/third mission), going to the countryside, stealing a tractor and towing a police car around the country lanes to my hearts content. The soundtrack was also ace. This was back in the days when on VC and SA there were at least 2 different radio stations to keep me entertained, and not force me into listening to the same station non-stop until I can't listen to Styx anymore (I'm looking at you, Liberty Rock Radio!). Second place? GTA II. I enjoyed the top-down style, and the pick-up-and-play feel to the free roam. Just nick a car and go drive it around until you find the flamethrower.

Picking a favourite is quite difficult, in some aspects I could say V and Online just because of the world they're in and how well the mechanics work but that just wouldn't be enough.
GTA IV will always have a place in my heart. I loved the darker tone and atmosphere of it, not to say I didn't like any other games but it made it feel a bit different and I liked that. There's just something appealing about driving through bleak Liberty City in the rain with the ambient radio station. Although I would not prefer the entire series to be like that, I feel it's uniqueness adds to its appeal. The more 'out there' feel and blatant crazy satire suites the series better IMO. It's hard to pick a favourite, the gameplay and mechanics of V feel so perfect compared to the old games and while I throughly enjoyed IV for its setting, it's not as if I dislike V for its own. There are many moments in V which I loved equally to IV.
While it's been ages since I played games in the 3D universe, it had some great moments too. Out of all of them I'd have to pick Vice City and VCS. The OST, (+1 to Wave 103) aesthetic and atmosphere of those games were great.
Chinatown Wars was pretty fun too, not my favourite but it was definitely a new way to experience GTA for me. Granted the DS version wasn't that fun being left handed and being unable to do some prompts and drive at the same time, but the PSP version was good enough in that regard.

The first time I played GTA was on the original playstation and was a demo that came free with playstation magazine where you got like 15 minutes then it cut out. I bought it not long after as well as the london 1969. Those were the days

It's hard to pick the one I like the most. I've played every release starting from Vice City. This one will always have that special place in my heart. But the same goes for San Andreas, which I think was the last game I have bought for my PS2 and I have played that so damn much. Then, I played IV on the PC, liked the story and graphics, but after I got to 100% I never played it again. Shitty PC gaming... But then... GTA V came out. I was obliged to play it, so I bought a PS3 for the cause. I never regretted that; I have bought no other game for the PS3 than GTA V.
What I'm saying is that all of the versions I've played were my favorite at the time being. But GTA Online has changed the game completely into this MMO-like game, which I love to play. Hooked for life. That's why I bought myself a PS4 last week, again just for GTA (but probably more games with time)

And that theme song... Why did Rockstar give up on it ? It feels like Sega ditching Sonic, I really don't understand why would anyone make this decision (well, unless it's copyright issues). So, how about you guys? This is so true for me, played the hell out of the original, loved it, but my vote goes to GTA III, was my first experience of a 3D open world and it blew my tiny mind!

San Andreas. Its the only game I have EVER finished 100%. I used to get up at 6:00am every day before school to play it. Such a great game, and still so easy to chuck on and mess around for a couple of hours. GTA 5 and Online are really close seconds for me though, especially since they introduced 1st person mode.

Has to be GTA III for me, it was my first GTA game and I completely fell in love with it. I still play it on my PS2 sometimes. Pure nostalgia
