lodus (@nommasch) Nice post, World Racing 2 looks (from a couple quick video views) pretty awesome especially for its time. Surprised I'd never seen it before.

I'm really curious: Has nobody of you ever stumbled upon Live for Speed? It is the best racing simulation to date for me. A three-man independent project startet in the early 2000s. The graphics are outdated - surely - but I still can't find a racing sim that is more intuitive and (very very important) has such a brilliant netcode. No lagging opponents. They recently added the Rockingham Motor Speedway - a track I believe Broughy has covered quite a while ago on YT. If interested, check out this GTR race. (no AI drivers, those are people racing from all over the world)

For me, here is a list of racing games (in chronological order) that I have played from oldest to newest before playing GTA Online for the first time in December 2014: Motorstorm Pacific Rift (2007): It came to quite a surprise that this became my No.1 game of its time. The atmosphere of the tracks, the vast variety and uniqueness of the vehicles with the introduction of Monster Trucks, the amazing soundtrack and the location of the island in the Pacific Coast with a volcano on the verge of eruption (when the Speed & Adrenaline Expansions came out) made this a white-knuckled ride! Motorstorm Arctic Edge (2008): Although being released on PSP and on PS2 (??) and having semi-poor graphics, this was a pretty good game to play on while on the fly. The vehicle customization was pretty good and plus it introduced a new series of vehicles into the game and there was a great variety of tracks too. The only thing which I didn't enjoy was the lack of DLC (only one car and that was it) and poor online servers, but other than that, it was a good game overall, but wasn't as great as MSPR though. Motorstorm Apocalypse (2011): Upon release and was the last console-based game by Evolution Studios (which made the Motorstorm francise), this became my favorite game. The way you progressed through the story, the location of a city falling apart by the earthquake, the customization it had, the way you can unlock parts and vehicles, DLC, tracks, multiplayer and everything else about it just amazed me so much that I played so much every day it became an addiction. I completed the story mode (including hardcore mode), all time trials, obtained all unlockables, unlocked all vehicles and parts, reached the highest rank etc. I competed very hard in this game and made quite a few friends along the way. DIRT Showdown (2012): This game game I played for hours-on-end but not as much as MSA, this game had some great variety of vehicles and focused on racing in the demolition derby vehicles which was more fun having a blast around 8-ball circuits and unlocking them wasn't that hard. The online section was very good and I participated to unlock some sweet prizes (but unfortunately wasn't on the pace with the top players) and I also enjoyed the Gymkhana events too. GRID 2 (2013): This was a pretty enjoyable game playing through singleplayer and multiplayer, I played a lot of it, and this had a lot f even of vehicles and being able to change the wheels and livery to whatever you wanted was cool, and the reintroduction of the return of the Demolition Derby mode I enjoyed the most of this game. But I rarely made some mistake on the track, whether it was taking a corner too fast or being shunted from behind GRID Autosport Black Edition (2014): After receiving my pre-order of this limited edition version of GRID Autosport, this I enjoyed more than GRID 2 and DIRT Showdown and also introduction racing clubs you could be part of on the Codemasters Racenet website which was cool too. The selection of cars and official tracks I enjoyed a lot especially the Demolition Derby races in the party mode and made a ton of friends as well. I certainly had lots of fun with them, although making the occasional crash or nudge costed me the whole race, but again, I still had fun Hope you enjoyed reading my story of how I became a racer over the years.

I played Geoff Crammond's Grand Prix 3 for so many hours when I was a kid. I can still dream all of those tracks despite its more then 10 years ago.
I think after that I played a lot of Toca 2. A British Touring Car game.
Then some Need for Speed games (started with Hot Pursuit 2) and a lot of time with Underground 1. The first game I played online against other players instead of a computer.
