Since no one has raised any hell since the end of the race...
-Congratulations to myself, Grumples_Plox (grimreaper977) , and Lawson40 for finishing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and congratulations to grim, @zenvohh , and Bezerka3 for grabbing the team win. Click here to view the full event results.
Race stats:
-Margin of victory: ~1 second (finished under safety car)
-# of cars on lead lap: 4
-Fastest lap of the race: 1:08.265 (Grumples_Plox (grimreaper977) )
-# of safety cars: 4
Remarks about the event:
I expected this event to go about very smoothly. Actually it ended up being as rocky as the first time we did this back in March. There are some good things to be taken away from this, however:
-The racing environment for this event was wholly unique and unlike anything else seen in NODO, even the previous oval races. It took finesse to keep the car stable on the track and guts to make passes. Even some of the better drivers in the crew who showed up found the car to be a handful. We managed to create a high-speed track where drivers were constantly on edge to keep the car at high speeds, and I hope those of you who hopped in on this appreciate that challenge.
-3 person teams I think worked out pretty well for this event. There's a chance they may return for the next time we do this.
-Pit strategy once again played a huge role. Drivers who were competitive for the win tried all different sorts of strategy to get to the front. @zenvohh straight up drove to the front, I tried to pit early and drive from the back, while a couple of others tried an aggressive strategy to stay out front and trap some people a lap down.
-For some newer members this was a great opportunity to pick up some experience driving poor handling cars and an opportunity to develop good racecraft.
There were some bad things:
-We didn't account for issues people may have with wrenches. We may try something different with the pits next time to remedy that--someone suggested lining a pit lane with a couple of secondary checkpoints and having a pit be a respawn in a secondary checkpoint.
-We missed safety car calls. There were at least two incidents consisting of massive amounts of AIDS where the safety car was not called. The last safety car should've been deployed when Shostakovich's car wandered onto the track, not after it was well into turn 1 and t-boned by a quarter of the field.
-Lack of competency on the race track. In the Xero Gas event I over-stressed a bit much the need to practice the track, most of everyone was fine after they took 10 laps on that track. I was horribly mistaken to assume the same thing would apply to this car and track combination, even after a track walkthrough video was added to the OP to allow drivers to gain insight on how to drive the track. Some people were not careful around others, committed some rather silly errors, and a couple of our better drivers got taken out in the process. It is ironic that when you look over grim's footage or my footage of the race that we make this look very easy, that the car is on rails, because neither is the case. I advise participants in future events to focus more on not crashing than pushing too hard and consequently crashing.
-No shows. If you sign up for a (non-reserve) spot, I expect you to show up. Some people didn't. The success of events like these depends a lot on the ability of people to show up. Your failure to show up is not just your loss, it's the loss of everyone else who does show up, especially for the event hosts--chickening out last minute for no good reason goes here too. It's even worse for an event like this where we're just barely hitting enough sign-ups for a proper race to take place.
That all said and done with, Baron says he's got something fun in store for you guys the next time we turn left which hopefully you'll see pop up on the forums eventually. Hope to see you all back around the next time we do this!
EDIT: Mine and grim's footy side-by-side. Whip out the popcorn and enjoy an hour of oval racing:
